The Return of the Repressed and the Implosion of History
Panel discussion with Michael Marder and Anton Tarasyuk
Moderated by David Riff
With Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, many repressed phenomena of recent history are returning to Europe, so many in fact that they are collapsing and imploding under their own weight. Philosophers Michael Marder and Anton Tarasyuk continue their written dialogue in person to discuss the philosophical and historical implications of the war in Ukraine.
Michael Marder is Ikerbasque Research Professor in the Department of Philosophy at the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU), Vitoria-Gasteiz, Spain. His writings span the fields of ecological theory, phenomenology, and political thought. He is the author of numerous scientific articles and monographs, including Plant-Thinking (2013); Phenomena—Critique—Logos (2014); The Philosopher’s Plant (2014); Dust (2016); Energy Dreams (2017); Heidegger (2018); Political Categories (2019); Pyropolitics (2015, 2020); Dump Philosophy (2020); Hegel’s Energy (2021); Green Mass (2021); and Philosophy for Passengers (2022).
Anton Tarasyuk is a philosopher with a specialization in German Idealism. After leaving the academy, Anton started working in consulting. In parallel, he has contributed journalistic and philosophical articles to various Ukrainian and European media. Right after the full-scale war on Ukraine was launched by Russia, Tarasyuk initiated the project PhilosophersForUkraine, publishing personal statements against the war written by Western philosophers. Currently, he serves as editor-in-chief of an ongoing Living the War documentary project, which collects numerous voices of people recounting their experiences during the first days of war and the battle of Kyiv.
