On 26 May 2017, Verena Dengler posted a photo on her Instagram account with the caption “Amadeus Mossad—new hot Austropop.” This titular reference forms the backdrop for an experimental spoken-word evening by the artist with text, music, and other elements that ties into her previous multidisciplinary practice. Dengler addresses some of the burning questions that occupy the (art) world, such as: “Which is worse: anti-Semitism or being accused of anti-Semitism?” Can Freemason Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart give us a special Austrian perspective and provide answers on the subject of conspiracy theories?
Verena Dengler (1981, Vienna, Austria) is an artist. In her spatial installations she experiments with the connections between sculpture and narrative and the possibilities of new interdisciplinary cross-genre narratives. Working between performance, discourse, theater, and visual art, she often employs provocative humor, like in her digital dime novel Die Galeristin und der schöne Antikapitalist, first published on Instagram and later available as an NFT. Her work has been shown in numerous exhibitions in Austria and abroad, including solo exhibitions at the Vienna Secession (2020); Kunsthalle Bern (2017); MUMOK, Vienna; Thomas Duncan Gallery, Los Angeles, or Galerie Meyer Kainer, Vienna. Dengler also writes art and cultural theory texts and reviews for Texte zur Kunst, Frieze D/E, Jungle World, FAZ, and Monopol, among others.
