Filming Colonial Complicities
Screening and talk with Oleksiy Radynski and Herwig G. Höller
The dynamics of power and popular resistance define Ukraine’s recent history. Filmmaker and writer Oleksiy Radynski joins Herwig G. Höller to present a selection of films made between 2013 and 2020. They include political documentaries on the origins of the Putinist counterrevolution in Ukraine, as well as archival and observational films that implicitly deal with the West’s complicity with Russia’s neocolonial efforts.
Oleksiy Radynski is a filmmaker and essayist with a focus on social and political struggles. His films have been screened at International Film Festival Rotterdam; Oberhausen International Short Film Festival; Docudays IFF, Kyiv; DOK Leipzig; Kurzfilmtage Winterthur; the Institute of Contemporary Arts, London; e-flux, New York; SAVVY Contemporary, Berlin; International Studio & Curatorial Program, New York, etc. In 2008, he cofounded the Visual Culture Research Center, an initiative for art, knowledge, and politics. He was a 2019–20 BAK Fellow at basis voor actuele kunst, Utrecht.
Herwig G. Höller is a journalist, art critic, and Slavonic Studies scholar. He teaches at the University of Graz and works for the Austria Presse Agentur, especially on Ukraine and Russia. He lives in Vienna.
