Feminist Solidarity in Wartime and the Limits of Comparison

Feminist solidarity and anti-war actions are always in the front line against structural violence, both during wartime and peacetime. Joining different perspectives and experiences related to(post)war issues within the post-Yugoslav space, Syria, and Ukraine, this discussion points to incomparable contexts that share common mechanisms of patriarchal and military violence.
Armina Pilav is a feminist, architect, researcher, and lecturer at the Department of Landscape Architecture, The University of Sheffield. Her research and teaching interests focus on topics of space, body, and politics in extreme conditions of war destruction, post-traumatic landscape systems or similar disasters. She publishes in magazines and academic journals and exhibits regularly. Her recent research on the destruction of Sarajevo and its inhabitants’ transformation of violence was shown at the Venice Biennale of Architecture (2018). She is a member of the Association for Culture and Art Crvena in Sarajevo.
Nour Shantout is an artist and researcher. She is currently pursuing her PhD at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. She works around subjugated heritage, counter-memory, counter-history, labor, and alienation from a postcolonial feminist perspective.
Jelena Petrović is a researcher, curator and writer, and (co)author of texts, events, exhibitions, and projects dealing with the (geo)politics of art and knowledge production in the post-Yugoslav space and beyond. She currently works at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. In 2011, she cofounded the feminist curatorial collective Red Mined. From 2008 to 2014, she was a member of the new Yugoslav art/theory Grupa Spomenik / Monument Group.
Yosh Pshyk is a feminist, manager, fundraiser, facilitator, and head of the nongovernmental organization Feminist Workshop, which is dedicated to the advancement of women, as well as more profound changes in societal norms, and combating discrimination and violence of various kinds. Since the beginning of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Feminist Workshop has widened the range of its activities with babysitting, helping with accommodation, elderly care, and psychological support for the community, among others.
